EC Plans to Extend Free Import of Goods from Ukraine until 2025

EC plans on Wednesday to extend free import of goods from Ukraine until 2025

The European Commission plans to submit on Wednesday a proposal to extend for another year, until mid-June 2025, the duty-free import of goods from Ukraine, including agro-products, it will include a number of “safeguard measures” to protect European agrarians.

The EC spokesman Eric Mamer said the day before that the proposal would be submitted “after approval by a panel of European commissioners”. It will be announced against the background of growing mass protests of farmers in different EU countries, who threaten to block European capitals and demand to change the pan-European agricultural policy, to lift numerous restrictions, including environmental ones, and to stop the uncontrolled import of cheap foreign products.

Earlier, European Commission representative Olof Gill told journalists that European Commissioner for Agriculture Janusz Wojciechowski had recently held a meeting with representatives of trade unions of European farmers and agricultural producers concerned about the duty-free and uncontrolled import of Ukrainian agricultural products. According to Gill, the proposals of European farmers will be taken into account when deciding on the extension (until June 2025) of the duty-free regime for all goods from Ukraine. Gill also pointed out that the proposal would include a number of “safeguard measures”.

The EU suspended duties on all goods coming from Ukraine for one year in June 2022 to help Kiev increase exports, which has led to marketing problems for European farmers. At the end of May 2023, duty-free imports were extended for another year, until June 2024.
