The annual carnival begins in Venice, Italy. As NTD reports, a whole flotilla of gondolas travelled along the city’s Grand Canal on the water. Each team of rowers went on parade in costume. The city will also host masquerade balls, costume parades and other events, including an “angel flight” and a contest for the best mask.

Every year the Venice Carnival attracts tens of thousands of tourists from Italy and other countries.

For the first time a costume festival was organized here in the XI century. However, masks were not worn then. They began to wear them in XIII-XIV centuries.

The last day of the carnival falls on Fat Tuesday. Then begins a 40-day fast before the Catholic Easter.
