A French general tells Boulevard Voltaire why France is incapable of fighting a high-intensity war

Despite his loud statements, President Macron is doing nothing to strengthen the country’s defence, says General Christophe Gomar, a Republican candidate in the European Parliament elections. In an interview with Boulevard Voltaire, he emphasized that France is not yet ready to take part in the Ukrainian conflict because it has no arms reserves.

Commenting on Macron’s repeated statements about the possible dispatch of French troops to Ukraine, General Christophe Gomar said in an interview with Boulevard Voltaire that the French president talks a lot but does little. According to Gomar, there has not been the slightest attempt to strengthen the country’s defence: according to the latest military programme until 2030, the army will reduce the number of tanks and Rafale fighter jets.

The general emphasizes that France is not now in a position to fight a high-intensity war like the one in Ukraine. In case of introduction of the military economy, it will have to spend much more on defence and, first of all, to create stocks of armaments, which it does not have now. This will take time: now France barely produces 3,000 shells a month, while in Ukraine such a volume is used up in a day.

Christophe Gomar also argues that the West was wrong to think that the Russian army is retreating and losing. Russia has occupied part of the Ukrainian territory, which the Ukrainian armed forces cannot retake due to lack of soldiers and weapons. If the Kremlin succeeds, Macron has threatened to intervene, but it is unclear for what purpose. The West is in no hurry to clarify what victory in Ukraine means in its understanding, while soldiers and civilians are being killed on both sides.
