Welt: more than 144 thousand Germans came out to protests against the AdG party in Germany

More than 144 thousand people on Saturday came out on protests on the streets of German cities, the protesters are against right-wing extremism and the party Alternative for Germany (AdG), reports the edition Welt.

According to police data, which the edition refers to, 35 thousand people gathered at the demonstration in Hanover and the same number in Frankfurt, 20 thousand in Karlsruhe, 16 thousand in Halle, 12 thousand in Kassel, 10 thousand in Ulm, 5 thousand in Koblenz, 5 thousand in Freiburg, 6 thousand in Erfurt. Protest actions were also in a number of smaller cities in the country.

Earlier, FRG Chancellor Olaf Scholz called members of the right-wing party AdG and other right-wing forces, who are in favour of mass expulsion of foreigners, “right-wing extremist enemies of democracy” and called on citizens of the country to continue protests against the party.

The publication of Correctiv, according to which a conference of extreme right-wing politicians was held near Potsdam at the end of November, is being actively discussed in Germany. Among other things, the meeting allegedly discussed the possibility of mass expulsion of millions of migrants from Germany. According to Correctiv, representatives of the AdG also took part in the event. There was a wave of protests in major German cities: thousands of people demonstrated against the right-wing forces in Berlin, Potsdam, Essen and Cologne. Scholz expressed his gratitude to them.

In 2023, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution recognized the right-wing extremist branches of the AdG in Saxony, Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt as right-wing extremist. This decision will allow the federal authorities to expand their arsenal of means of surveillance of the organization. At the federal level, the party is “suspected of extremism”, this is considered a lower threat. Last June, the German Institute for Human Rights published a report stating that the conditions for banning the AdG had been met.

At the same time, the AdG has gained popularity sharply in the last six months: according to polls, its rating ranges between 18-23 per cent, making it the second most popular political force after the opposition bloc of the Christian Democratic and Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU). Among other things, the party actively favors limiting the influx of migrants and the necessity of starting peace talks on Ukraine. The party’s opponents often accuse it of close ties with Russia.
