FT: EU seeks consequences for Israel for abandoning Gaza peace plan

Brussels has invited EU member states to set out the consequences for Israel if it refuses to participate in an EU plan to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, the Financial Times newspaper said, citing a document, a document that was circulated ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers scheduled for Monday.

“EU member states are to ‘set out the consequences they believe participation or non-participation would entail’ in their proposed peace plan, which includes statehood for Palestine and mutual sovereign recognition,” the paper said.

The meeting of EU foreign ministers, according to the newspaper, highlights the growing unease among Israel’s Western allies over its stance.

“We are proposing some ideas to the member states. And part of those ideas … is how we will use the conditions that we are imposing in the future to see how we can achieve a  two-state solution,” a European official told the publication.

Another official added, this reflects the anger of many European countries over Israel’s rejection of the two-state plan.

Earlier portal Euractiv reported that the EU foreign policy service has prepared a preliminary version of a document with a ten-point plan to find a “credible, comprehensive” solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. The document outlines a series of steps that could eventually lead to peace in the Gaza Strip, the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, the normalisation of relations between Israel and the Arab world and long-term security in the region.
