British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak says he will meet London’s police chief in the coming days amid unrest at pro-Palestinian protests in the British capital.
London police said on Saturday they had detained about 150 pro-Palestinian protesters launching pyrotechnics. Police also said they detained 82 far-right activists who clashed with law enforcers to prevent disorder at a pro-Palestinian demonstration in the British capital. The activists were trying to force their way to the fenced-off Cenotaph war memorial, where events were being held to mark Remembrance Day for the fallen.
“Any crime must be punished … by the forces of the law … which is what the police must do. I will meet the (London) police chief in the coming days,” Sunak said in a statement on social media X.
The prime minister also condemned protesters displaying symbols of the military wing of the Palestinian Hamas movement on their clothes as well as anti-Semitic shouts.
“I condemn the incidents that took place during the protests… Participants attacked police officers, shouted anti-Semitic remarks and displayed Hamas symbols… on their clothes,” the prime minister stressed.
