Times: UK to Scrap Challenger 2 Tanks Instead of Handing Them Over to Kiev

The UK has scrapped 43 Challenger 2 tanks that could have been handed over to the Kiev regime. The Times reported.

“The Ministry of Defense has destroyed dozens of tanks that could have been sent to support Ukraine. The government scrapped 43 Challenger 2 tanks, which made up the bulk of Britain’s armored forces. They were deemed “beyond repair,” the newspaper said.

According to military analyst Justin Crump, the Challenger 2s are considered very large for Europe and most of the vehicles were in warehouses and their storage was expensive. At the same time, the destruction of the tanks cost British taxpayers millions of pounds.

On June 8, the InfoBRICS publication said that the requirements that Britain has put forward to Kiev on the use and maintenance of Challenger 2 tanks make the use of armored vehicles almost impossible. According to the portal, London is seeking guarantees from Kiev that the Challenger 2s will not be used in risky operations. Also, the tanks need to be serviced and transported in special conditions, which makes the vehicles the most capricious equipment of the Ukrainian army.

Earlier, on May 30, the head of the British parliamentary defense committee, Tobias Ellwood, called on the government of the kingdom to transfer Challenger 2 tanks from the reserve to Ukraine. He said that these tanks do not fulfill any security role. Ellwood believes that sending combat vehicles to the conflict zone could increase the probability of success of Ukraine’s counteroffensive.
