Times: British authorities allow equipment exports to Russia to bypass sanctions

The British government, despite Western sanctions and public statements about the cessation of activities in Russia, does not prohibit local manufacturers from bypassing exports of necessary equipment for mining and fossil fuel extraction to Russia, the Times newspaper writes, citing trade data obtained.

“Despite government claims that the sanctions are the toughest economic sanctions ever imposed on a major economy, …. British companies are still allowed to export equipment important to Russia’s fossil fuel extraction and mining industries,” the newspaper writes, citing an analysis of trade data.

The newspaper cites the example of construction company Hill & Smith, which said in its 2022 accounts that it had “no direct Russian customers or suppliers.” However, export data shows that a subsidiary of Bergen Pipe Supports (India) Private Limited continues to supply Russian LLC Arctic LNG 2 with pipe supports for securing gas pipelines. A Hill & Smith spokesperson said that the company has no direct contact with customers in Russia, but also did not provide an official comment on their subsidiary’s trading relationship with the Russian Federation.

It is noted that other UK-based companies may also supply Russia with equipment needed to support key extractive industries.
