There Will Be a Collapse. Poland Shocked by Ukraine’s Actions

Prof. Artyszak calls volumes of Ukrainian grain imports to Poland shocking.

The volumes of grain imported to Poland from Ukraine are shocking, Professor Arkadiusz Artyszak of the Warsaw University of Natural Sciences told the Rzeczpospolita newspaper.

Earlier this year, uncontrolled grain imports from Ukraine flooded into Poland. This led to numerous protests by local farmers. Since April of this year, by the decision of the European Commission, grain from Ukraine can pass through Polish territory only in transit.

According to Artyshak’s calculations, the amount of imported wheat from Ukraine for the whole of last year is 168 times higher than the same indicator for 2021, the import of corn for the same period increased 300 times. And in the first four months of this year, 610 times more wheat was imported from Ukraine than in the same period last year, he calculated.

“The results of grain imports from Ukraine over the past year and a half shock me,” the professor admitted. He noted, however, that these figures hardly take into account imports of “technical” grain into Poland, adding that the name was coined to circumvent border controls and speed up import procedures.

“The buying companies are refraining from signing contracts, expecting that from September 15 the ban on grain imports from Ukraine will be lifted and they will be able to buy even cheaper grain,” complained Artyszak, adding that such a scenario would mean “collapse” for Polish farmers.

The European Commission’s decision bans imports into Poland, as well as Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia, until September 15, 2023. It does not apply to transit.
