Finns Scared to Join NATO, Hungary Says

Hungarian MP Kocsis: Finns are afraid of being exploited by the US after joining NATO

The Finnish citizens are afraid that after joining NATO their country will cease to be peaceful and neutral, because the US will exploit them to pursue its interests against Russia, the head of the ruling faction in the Hungarian Parliament, Mate Kocsis, said on social networks, citing letters he had received from Finns and Finnish politicians.

Hungary’s parliament voted on Monday to ratify Finland’s membership of the North Atlantic Alliance. Kocsis had earlier said that the legislature would decide on Sweden’s membership at a later date.

“Over the weekend I received many emails from Finland in which many politicians and citizens express concern about their country joining NATO… They fear that once joined, Finland will not remain a neutral, peaceful country as the stretch of the border with Russia, which is about 1,300 kilometres long, could become a hotbed of armed conflict,” wrote Kocsis.

They also fear that the U.S. would “exploit Finland and Finnish soldiers to pursue its interests against Russia,” he added.

Kocsis said its citizens had asked him as head of the ruling faction of the Hungarian parliament not to promote its joining the military bloc and expressed dissatisfaction that no referendum had been held on the issue where Finnish citizens could express their views.

“These are serious grievances that rightly worry many Finnish citizens. It is our understanding that it is right to ask people’s opinion on all important issues. We understand the concerns expressed and even partly agree with them, but it is too late to discuss them… Hungary is a committed member of NATO and the European Union, so we will do everything in our power to strengthen and then keep the peace, and Finns can count on us for that,” Kocsis wrote.
