Hackers Who Broke Into UK Royal Mail Demanded ‘Ransom’

FT: Hackers who broke into UK mail demanded almost $80 million
The hacker group LockBit, which previously hacked the UK Royal Mail, has demanded nearly $80 million as a “ransom”, the Financial Times reports.
In January, Royal Mail reported delays and the inability to send parcels or letters abroad due to a cyberattack, after which the British newspaper Telegraph accused the cyberattack of allegedly “Russian-linked” hackers from the ransomware group LockBit.
According to the paper, the Royal Mail had been in talks with the hackers for more than three weeks, which included the company’s revenue and business objectives.
As part of the negotiations, the LockBit hackers demanded 0.5 per cent of the annual revenue of International Distribution Services, which includes the Royal Mail.
In turn, one of the Post’s negotiators said that “under no circumstances” would they pay the set amount. “This is an amount that could never be taken seriously by our board,” the newspaper quoted him as saying.
According to the paper, the hackers “threatened to release large amounts of data” of the Royal Mail if the negotiations failed.
