Serbian Foreign Ministry: Kosovo’s Independence Withdrawn by Another State

The recognition of Kosovo’s independence has been withdrawn by another country, so Belgrade is keeping the declarations of ten states, but the Serbian authorities do not make public their list. This was stated by Serbian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic in his Tuesday comment to Vecernje Novosti.

According to the newspaper, Dacic confirmed the information that “another country has withdrawn its recognition of Kosovo. The minister said that Serbia is stepping up efforts to withdraw recognition of the self-declared Kosovo’s independence in response to Pristina’s violation of Washington agreements, under which the unrecognized entity is not allowed to apply for membership in international organizations.

“We respect their position and we don’t want to put them under pressure from Pristina, and especially from their allies. We have to be careful. Second, we made commitments in the Washington agreements to stop the initiative of withdrawing recognition and we wanted to show that we stand by what we have signed, although Pristina is not doing it. The difference in the attitude towards the commitments undertaken is essential and everyone who acts as a mediator knows very well who is a serious partner and who is a liar,” Dacic told reporters, when asked why Serbia did not publish the list of countries that have withdrawn the recognition.

On December 15, 2022, the Prime Minister of self-proclaimed Kosovo, Albin Kurti, handed over the application for membership to the Czech Presidency of the EU Council. 5 of 27 EU countries – Spain, Romania, Slovakia, Greece and Cyprus – do not recognise Kosovo’s independence, which is already blocking any practical action to prepare for its admission to the EU. The only way to solve the problem is for Belgrade to recognise Kosovo’s independence. In recent months the EU has been actively pushing Serbia to recognise the autonomous province’s independence, arguing that its position on Kosovo and relations with Russia are the primary obstacles to Serbia’s EU accession.

The Serbian autonomous province of Kosovo and Metohija declared independence in 2008 and has recently sought membership in international organisations. More than half of the 193 UN nations, including Russia, India and China, oppose recognising Kosovo.
