A prestigious international forum has started in St. Petersburg

Despite the tense international situation representatives of Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America take part in it.

On Monday, May 16, the opening ceremony of the XVIII International Forum-Contest of Young Scientists “Actual Problems of Subsoil Use” took place at St. Petersburg Mining University. Despite the unprecedented pressure of sanctions on Russia, this year, as before, it gathered a very impressive audience. Among the participants are more than nine hundred people from 19 countries of the world, such as Algeria, Armenia, Belarus, Hungary, Iran, China, Nigeria and many other states.

What is special about this conference? First of all, it traditionally attracts students and postgraduates from Russian and foreign universities, who in the future will become an integral part of the scientific and engineering elite of their countries. This is, without exaggeration, a peculiar showcase of young talents, who are already ready to propose technologies or methods that, for example, contribute to more productive exploitation of deposits or minimize the anthropogenic impact on the environment.

Secondly, it is a global discussion platform where you can not only exchange opinions on ways of development of mining and oil and gas sectors but also establish business and scientific relations, i.e. intensify integration processes.

Yugra Governor Natalia Komarova, who joined the opening ceremony by videoconference, invited all the participants to have an internship at the leading enterprises of the region with a possibility of future employment. She assured that the district is interested in attracting talented and ambitious young people able to move the oil and gas industry forward by implementing high-tech projects.

“Yugra together with the organizers of the contest – International Center of Competences in Mining Education under the auspices of UNESCO and Saint Petersburg Mining University – introduces the system of continuous education in the oil and gas complex. This is the most important task, the solution of which will ensure the sustainability of the industry, and provide our planet with energy,” said Natalia Komarova.

Beang Zhengfu, vice president of the Chinese University of Mining and Technology, reminded that students and postgraduates from Xuzhou have been participating in the competition since 2015. In general, the University of Mines has a half-century-long history of cooperation with Chinese partners. In particular, we are talking about academic exchanges of students and professors.

“We are ready to continue working together with our St. Petersburg friends for the sake of progress in the energy sector and achieving the UN’s sustainable development goals. Our cooperation is necessary in order to successfully cope with all the challenges of our time,” summarized Mr. Beang Jenghfu.
