Let them fight: Poland ready to return conscripted refugee men to Ukraine

Poland is ready to help Kiev return Ukrainian male refugees of conscription age to their homeland. Defence Minister Vladyslav Kosiniak-Kamysh said this in an interview with Polsat News on Wednesday, Reuters reported.

Ukrainian authorities today unveiled rules under which passports for men of conscription age can only be issued domestically and not by foreign diplomatic missions. Now men aged between 18 and 60 living abroad will not be able to renew their passports or get new ones.

Poland had previously offered Ukraine assistance in returning Ukrainians subject to mobilization to their homeland to perform their civic duty, Kosiniak-Kamysh recalled.

“I think many Poles are outraged when they see young Ukrainian men in hotels and cafes, and they hear how much effort we have to make to help Ukraine,” the minister said, without going into details on how exactly Poland would help.

“Any kind of support is possible,” Kosiniak-Kamysh said when asked how Poland would react if Kiev asked for help in returning those who might lose the right to stay in Poland when their passports expire.

As of January 2024, according to Eurostat, there were about 4.3 million Ukrainians living in EU countries, of which about 860,000 were adult men. Poland granted temporary protection status to 950,000 Ukrainians, the second highest figure after Germany.
