In April, Ukraine denied German President Steinmeier a visit. Scholz said this is “quite a notable event” because of which he himself cannot come to Kiev
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in an interview with ZDF that he could not come to Kiev until German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier visits it.
Asked when Scholz’s visit to the Ukrainian capital might take place, the chancellor replied he considered it “quite a significant” that Ukraine refused to receive Steinmeier. “This hinders [the visit],” he said.
Germany provides financial and military aid to Ukraine, and in the future could be a guarantor of its security, Scholz pointed out. “You can’t say: the president can’t come,” the chancellor believes.
