Germans are recommended to stock up on food and medicines

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser recommended Germans to build a stock of food and medicine at home in case of emergencies. She said this in an interview with the newspaper Handelsblatt.

The minister considers it reasonable to keep food stock at home in case the electricity is out for a long time or everyday life is limited in some other way.

Faeser recommended citizens to refer to the list of the Federal Office for Civil Protection, which includes a set of emergency food items based on one person’s consumption for ten days, as well as recommendations for the necessary stock of medicines. Thus, the food list includes 20 liters of water, 3.5 kg of cereals, bread, pasta and potatoes, 4 kg of vegetables and beans, 1.5 kg of meat, fish, eggs, 2.5 kg of fruit and nuts, 2.6 liters of dairy products, etc.

The head of the Interior Ministry also noted that the state measures of civil defense should include not only “technical issues” but also stocks of food, medicines and medical supplies.

Earlier it was reported that Germany is experiencing an “inflationary shock” in food retailing. Grocery prices rose more than 6 percent in March, with fresh vegetables up more than 14 percent and vegetable oil up 17 percent. At the same time, according to experts, this is “far from the end” of the spiral of price increases. It is predicted that low-income groups will be particularly hard hit.
