Bloomberg: Slovakia is moving more and more towards Russia

Bratislava has significantly changed the vector of its foreign policy, although recently it supported Ukraine’s accession to the EU and sending military aid. But after Robert Fitzo’s return to power, the country began to lean towards Russia, Bloomberg writes. Slovakia is now against sending military aid and its soldiers to Ukraine, and criticises the EU for not wanting to move towards peace.

Slovakia is no longer the country that advocated for Ukraine’s accession to the EU and provided it with military aid, Bloomberg writes. Robert Fitzo’s return to power made Slovakia “one of the most pro-Russian countries in Europe.”

Now the country formally still fulfils its obligations to the EU and NATO, but the upcoming elections may finally confirm the new political vector. Presidential candidate Peter Pellegrini, an ally of Fitzo, also subscribes to his views.

Fitzo promotes a “sovereign Slovak foreign policy”, which, among other things, implies the rejection of military aid to Ukraine, the newspaper notes. The politician recently rebuked his EU colleagues for not wanting to move towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict.

This statement caused a spat with the UK and the Czech Republic, which suspended “government consultations with Slovakia due to disagreements in foreign policy.” However, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke favourably of Slovak policy. He said that Slovakia “has its own opinion about the situation in the world.”

At the same time, it seems to the author of the article that Fitzo “is not too concerned about losing friends in Europe”.
