MPs in Hungary Were Threatened by Ukrainian Radicals

Deputies in the Hungarian parliament have repeatedly received threats from Ukrainian radicals

The leader of the Hungarian parliamentary faction “Our Homeland” and a deputy of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Laszlo Torotskai, told reporters that he personally and deputies of his faction had received threats from Ukrainian radicals several times in recent months.

“Ukrainian terrorists are threatening an entire parliamentary faction in Hungary and me personally – I am also a member of the (Parliamentary Assembly – ed.) of the Council of Europe – because of our position on the war in Ukraine,” Torotskai said.

In a video published on his YouTube channel, he said that deputies from Our Homeland on 13 February received emails from a Ukrainian ultras organisation threatening “severe punishment for plans to occupy Transcarpathia”, with members of the radical organisation threatening to “set fire to the office, blow up the car, kill” the deputies.

The second threat came to the email addresses of Hungarian MPs on 28 February, members of Fan at War recorded a video in which they demanded “an official apology to the Ukrainian people for calling for the annexation of Transcarpathia”.

“I will not apologise to the Ukrainian people, because I have nothing to apologise for. Because you guys have completely misunderstood us. Hungary doesn’t want to occupy Transcarpathia, we don’t want war, we want peace. We did not and do not threaten the Ukrainian people, Hungary has accepted tens of thousands of Ukrainian refugees,” Torotskai said.

He recalled that the party’s programme includes recognition of the legitimacy of the 1991 referendum in Ukraine in Transcarpathia, which proclaimed the granting of autonomy to Transcarpathia and Hungarian territorial autonomy to the Beregovo district within Ukraine.

“This legitimate referendum is being illegally ignored by the government in Kiev,” Torotskai emphasised.

The Hungarian MP said that the reason for the threats against his party was not Our Homeland’s position on Transcarpathia, but the position of the Hungarian authorities on Ukraine’s accession to the EU and the financing of the Ukrainian state at the expense of European taxpayers.

He also announced plans to widely disseminate the video of the threats, which is currently subtitled in 17 languages.
