The Japanese City of Fukuyama Introduced a State of High Alert Because of a Cat

The Japanese city of Fukuyama has imposed a state of high alert because of a cat that fell into a tank with hazardous chemicals at a local plant and ran away, Asahi reports.

The incident occurred at Nomura Plating Fukuyama Factory on the night of 11 March, according to the publication. The cat fell into a vat of hexavalent chromium, managed to get out of it and ran away, CCTV cameras showed.

Authorities stepped up patrols and warned residents about the dangers of approaching the animal. Health officials speculated that the cat may have died from chemical burns.

Hexavalent chromium is highly acidic and carcinogenic. It can cause rashes, irritation or damage to the eyes and skin, and lung cancer if inhaled. Plant employees wear protective clothing.
