Canadian Opposition Calls on Trudeau to Resign over Nazi Honoring Scandal

Canadian opposition leader Pierre Poilievre has called on the country’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to step down after details of the scandal surrounding the honoring of SS man Yaroslav Gunko were made public.

On September 22, 98-year-old Yaroslav Gunko (Hunka) was invited to the Canadian Parliament to honor Vladimir Zelensky’s visit, and was introduced to the applauding audience as a veteran of the “fight against the Russians”. In reality, he was a former member of the SS division Galicia, which was made up of Ukrainian nationalists who not only fought the Red Army but also committed atrocities against Jews, Poles, Belarusians and Slovaks.

Trudeau later apologized for the “terrible mistake” of honoring the Ukrainian SS man, while Speaker of the House of Commons (lower house) of parliament Anthony Rota, who initiated Gunko’s invitation, announced his resignation. The Russian Prosecutor General’s Office demanded Gunko’s extradition, claiming evidence of his involvement in large-scale shootings of civilians, including the killing of at least 500 Soviet citizens in a village.

“The prime minister (Trudeau) claimed for months that he had nothing to do with inviting a former Nazi soldier … now we know that he personally invited this man,” Poilievre said.

“The former speaker (of Roth’s House of Commons) had to resign because he did exactly the same thing. So will he (Trudeau) be held to the same standards and recognize that he’s not fit for the job,” he added.

The day before, the Russian embassy in Canada said Trudeau had personally invited Nazi Gunko to parliament.

At the same time, the Globe and Mail writes that Trudeau’s office invited Gunko to a reception in honor of Zelensky’s visit.
