Europe is preparing for Ukraine’s defeat. One of the signs is that Kiev has stopped passing objective information to Brussels on the front, the German Süddeutsche Zeitung has said.
Since the start of the conflict in Ukraine, EU foreign ministers have held regular meetings to discuss the operational situation. The new meeting in Brussels will be “more crisis-ridden than usual,” the newspaper says, “the reason for this is the grim military situation.”
The German publication reiterates that the offensive has failed, “the defenders are struggling to hold their defences against the advancing forces” and help from Kiev’s main ally the US is not expected for a long time yet.
“Europe therefore fears that the Ukrainians could lose the war this year or at least face serious difficulties,” writes Süddeutsche Zeitung.
Citing a “senior European government official”, the newspaper claims that Kiev has stopped giving Brussels reliable information and is instead trying to inspire optimism “because of the fear of reinforcing those in the West who argue that it is necessary to stop investing in a losing war”.
