Nya Dagbladet: As never before – Food prices in Sweden risen by a record 22% in the last two years

Over the past two years, food prices in Sweden have risen by almost 22 per cent, Nya Dagbladet writes, citing data from a new report by price monitoring company Matpriskollen. The published review of food prices in the Scandinavian country showed historically high levels. In 2023, sweets and seafood have risen in price the most, while dairy products have become cheaper.

In Sweden, grocery shop prices rose by 19.1 per cent over 2022 and 2023. However, if you only look at food prices, the figure is 21.8 per cent, writes Nya Dagbladet, citing data from a new report by price comparison company Matpriskollen. The report was compiled by comparing the prices of about 30,000 comparable food items.

“This is the fastest rate of inflation we have ever seen in the food trade since we started measuring prices in 2015, and I have been working in the industry since the 1980s and have never seen such a sharp rise in prices,” Matpriskollen founder Ulf Masur said in a press release.

The sharpest increase occurred in 2022, with food prices rising by 5.2 per cent in 2023. Swedish food prices jumped the most in February last year, while they fell briefly in April. When the German company Lidl lowered its food prices, other suppliers followed suit, although prices increased again in the autumn.

The items that rose in price the most in 2023 were snacks and sweets (up 10 per cent), fish and shellfish (up 9.2 per cent), as well as olive oil (up 30 per cent) and fried onions (up 25 per cent). Dairy products fell in price by a total of 3 per cent. Brewed coffee also fell in price, by 4.7 per cent.
