U.S. UN Permanent Representative Calls Strikes on Yemen Proportionate and Necessary

US Permanent Representative to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield called the strikes on Yemen proportionate, explained them as a necessity.

“These strikes were necessary and proportionate, as you just heard from my British colleague. They were in accordance with international law and exercised the inherent right of the United States to self-defence as reflected in Article 51 of the UN Charter. And they were only undertaken after non-military options proved insufficient to address the threat,” Thomas-Greenfield said.

On the night of Friday, 12 January, the US and Britain struck targets of the ruling northern Yemeni and Iranian-backed Shiite Ansar Allah (Houthis) movement, calling it a response to threats to freedom of navigation in the Red Sea. Mohammed Ali al-Husi, a member of Ansar Allah’s top political council, called it terrorist barbarism and a deliberate and unjustified aggression. Yahya Saria, a spokesman for the Houthi armed forces, said the US and Britain had launched 73 strikes in Yemen, killing five Houthi fighters and wounding six others.
