Telegraph: Britain plans to arm itself with hypersonic missiles by 2030

Britain plans to arm its army with hypersonic missiles by 2030, the Telegraph newspaper reported, citing sources.

“The Ministry of Defence is insisting that the new weapons be developed and assembled entirely in the UK and, as far as can be understood, the deadline for putting them into service has been set for 2030,” the newspaper writes.

It is noted that the UK’s plans to develop a hypersonic missile are still at an early stage and it is still unclear whether it will be launched from land, sea or air.

A military source in the country’s government told the newspaper that if Labour leader Keir Starmer comes to power in the UK, the military will have to scrap the hypersonic project due to insufficient investment.

The sources also told the newspaper that the UK could go for the purchase of hypersonic missiles from the US if there is a necessity to get this type of weapon faster.

Hypersonic missiles are those capable of speeds above 5M (6,000 kilometers per hour near the Earth’s surface). Due to this speed, they are virtually invulnerable to modern missile defence systems. Russia and China have hypersonic weapons, and the United States is testing them. Also, a missile with a hypersonic guidance unit was presented in Iran.
