WSJ: Without Western Support, Ukrainian Authorities Have to Start Printing Money

Without support from Western countries, Ukraine will have to create serious risks for its economy – either reduce budget spending or print money to make up the deficit, the Wall Street Journal writes.

“In the short term, Ukraine is in a more vulnerable situation amid declining Western support and growing concerns about a possible shift in U.S. public opinion after the 2024 presidential election. Without support, Ukraine will have to cut budget spending or even print money to fill the deficit, which poses serious risks to its economy,” the newspaper points out.

The newspaper also emphasises that Ukraine’s investments in its own military production facilities cannot bring it on a par with the much larger Russian military-industrial complex.

The US Congress never agreed on the White House’s request for new aid to Kiev, and the administration said that it would no longer be able to send weapons to Ukraine without the lawmakers’ approval. Republican opposition is demanding steps from President Joe Biden to secure the border, disputing the necessity of new multi-billion dollar support for Kiev without presenting a further plan of action.
