German Politicians Urged Scholz to Give Ukraine Taurus Missiles

A number of representatives of the Green Party, the FDP (Free Democratic Party) and the opposition Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Germany have expressed the necessity to transfer Taurus missiles to Ukraine and accused German Chancellor Olaf Scholz of excessive restraint. This was reported by the Rheinische Post newspaper on 6 January.

It is noted that some politicians openly advocated strikes on objects on the territory of Russia.

“The delivery of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine is long overdue,” the newspaper quotes Sara Nanni, an expert on security policy of the Union-90/Greens faction, as saying.

In her opinion, the most effective defence against airstrikes by the Russian Armed Forces is for Ukraine to fire at targets on the Russian territory and in new regions of the Russian Federation. She said that the passivity comes primarily from the Chancellor and is not a common position of the government.

In turn, the head of the parliamentary defence committee Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann (FDP) urged German politicians not to be afraid of “their own cool.” She believes that the country should finally deliver the Taurus in order to “interrupt Russian supply lines.”

In addition, CDU foreign policy expert Roderich Kiesewetter expressed the opinion that the lack of military aid to Kiev is allegedly “de facto support for Russia.”

“Taurus are important because this system is effective and through it supply and command structures far behind the front line can be destroyed,” the Bundestag deputy said.

As Kiesewetter pointed out, missiles can be used to destroy the Crimean bridge and thus complicate the supply of Russian forces through the peninsula, forcing Russia to leave Crimea.

Earlier, on 3 January, the head of the German Bundestag (parliament) committee for European affairs, Anton Hofreiter, and the Christian Democratic Union’s representative for foreign policy, Norbert Rettgen, said that Ukraine should be supplied with Taurus cruise missiles.
