A Disgraced UN Official Became the Head of the International Red Cross

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has appointed Pierre Krenbühl as the organisation’s director general, the committee said in a statement.

“He is known as a strategically minded and committed leader with extensive organisational experience and dedication to the ICRC,” the organisation’s press office specified.

Krenbühl served as commissioner-general of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) from 2014 to 2019.

The agency accused Krenbühl of creating the position of “special adviser” to which he appointed his mistress Maria Mohammedi. The UNRWA ethics commission report said many people both inside and outside the agency knew about the married Krenbühl’s affair with his counsellor.

In November 2019, Krenbühl resigned amid media reports that he had used his authority for personal gain. In the wake of these reports, Switzerland suspended financial assistance to UNRWA.
