Politico: Tilt in Russia’s favour – Czech president on the situation in the Ukrainian conflict in 2024

Czech President Petr Pavel expects a “significant change” in Russia’s favour next year. According to him, it will be extremely difficult for Ukraine to win. The counter-offensive has failed, Orban opposes Ukraine in the EU, and the allocation of new funds by the United States is blocked by Republicans. If Trump wins the election, Kiev could lose any support at all.

The situation in Ukraine next year will turn in Moscow’s favour, Czech President Petr Pavel said. As Politico notes, the head of the Czech Republic doubts that Kiev will be able to win.

The EU will have to make a lot of efforts to turn the situation in Kiev’s favour in 2024. After all, by the Ukrainian officials’ own admission, the counter-offensive has failed and the military resource is running out. As the publication notes, the cold winter will further complicate the situation on the front.

Meanwhile, support from allies is weakening and may soon cease altogether. In Europe, opposition from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has intensified. This threatens to disrupt the release of the €50bn aid package. “In the US, plans for further aid to Kiev have been stalled for weeks because of Republican opposition”.

American elections in 2024 could dramatically change the situation not only in Ukraine, but also in the world. In case of his victory, Trump may well start negotiations with Russia.

“There is an expectation on Vladimir Putin’s part that if Donald Trump succeeds, it will be possible to get along with him, regardless of what Ukraine or the rest of Europe thinks, and return Russia to the status of a key player,” Peter Pavel said.
