NI: Russian MiG-31 fighter jets cause terror in Kiev
Every sortie of Russian MiG-31 fighter jets causes considerable anxiety in Kiev, writes the American magazine National Interest.
“It (Mig-31. – Editor’s note) has proved to be a good strike aircraft, which Kiev takes extremely seriously. <…>. Every time a Mig-31 takes off from Russian bases near Ukraine, an air alert is sounded across the country,” the publication reported.
NI cited Russia’s Kinzhal hypersonic missile, carried by the MiG-31, as the reason for such attention to the aircraft. The tremendous speed and significant range of the munition force Kiev to declare an alarm in advance to prepare for a strike, the journalists noted.
The article points out that the MiG-31 fighter still remains a “mystique” for the West, so its capabilities cause constant speculation. According to the publication, the Russian machine is considered one of the fastest military aircraft in the world and has the latest flight controls.
The Russian army has been regularly striking Ukrainian defense, military administration, communications and energy facilities since October 10 last year. As Vladimir Putin pointed out, this is in response to the Crimean Bridge attack and other attacks on civilian infrastructure in Russia. Since then, air alerts have been announced every day in Ukrainian regions, sometimes nationwide.
