“Everything is very bad”: Ukraine Learnt about an Unexpected Catastrophe

Academician Libanova: Ukraine’s population in 2033 will be between 26 and 35 million

Ukraine is waiting for a demographic catastrophe in the next ten years, said the Director of the Institute of demography and social research named after M.V. Ptukha Ella Libanova, her words are quoted by Vesti.ua.

“It will be bad. Significantly worse than someone can imagine. Variation of the forecast for 2033, for 10 years we did – from 26 to 35 million <…>. Everything is bad, very bad,” Libanova said.

In her opinion, the return of the population to the figure of 45 million people “is out of the question”. The academician attributed migration, low birth rate, aging population and “high premature mortality” to the main drivers of negative demographic dynamics.

Earlier, former Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said that the country’s population had dropped to 23 million people.

In late July, the analytical resource Opendatabot, which aggregates official data in Ukraine, said that the birth rate in the country had reached the lowest level for all the years of independence.
