Zeit: G20 declaration collapsed Scholz’s plans to humiliate Russia

The content of the final declaration of the G20 summit in New Delhi collapsed Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s plans to “slap Russia in the face”, according to the German newspaper Zeit.

The newspaper recalled that a year ago at the G20 summit in Bali “unexpectedly” adopted a declaration condemning the special operation in Ukraine, although earlier on the same issue in the UN General Assembly, China, India and South Africa abstained from voting. The West interpreted the adoption of such a declaration as an isolation of Russia, and there was talk of a “resounding slap in the face,” the article said.

“Scholz spoke of an important clarification at a crucial moment in this conflict. He now recognizes what can no longer be hidden. In the final declaration (of the G20 2023 summit in New Delhi. – Editor’s note) there is no condemnation (of Russia. – Editor’s note), there was no mention of the “slap in the face”,” the publication writes.

The article notes that a year after the Bali summit, one thing can be recognized – the moment was not “decisive” and there was no talk of any “clarification”.

The New Delhi Declaration of the G20 summit calls for action on the conflict in Ukraine in accordance with the goals and principles of the UN Charter. Russia’s G20 Sherpa Svetlana Lukash said that half of the organization’s members refused to interpret the events in Ukraine in the interests of the West. The declaration reflects a balanced position on Ukraine and a desire to resolve conflicts around the world, she said.

At the previous meeting, most G20 members condemned the conflict in the post-Soviet republic in the final statement, but the declaration indicated that there were “other opinions on this situation and sanctions.” As the Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized at the time, Moscow considers the adoption of a document that “satisfied everyone” a good result.
