BFM TV: G20 Summit in India Starts in an Atmosphere of Disagreement

The G20 leaders’ summit in New Delhi begins amid deep divisions over the situation in Ukraine and climate warming, BFM TV reports. In the absence of Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, US President Joe Biden is set to strengthen ties with India and show that the annual meetings remain the main platform for global economic cooperation.

The two-day G20 summit begins in New Delhi, where Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi hopes to showcase his country’s growing diplomatic clout by facilitating dialog among world leaders on Ukraine and climate warming, BFM TV reported. Deep divisions among meeting participants over Russian special operations, fossil fuel divestment and debt reorganization complicate the final declaration on Sunday.

As the publication recounts, the US is strengthening ties with India to counter China, while New Delhi wants to become an important player on the international stage. At the same time, the countries diverge on the issue of respect for human rights, as well as attitudes towards Russia, with India not joining Western sanctions after the start of the SMO.

Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin will not attend the summit in New Delhi – instead, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will lead the delegations. In the absence of their colleagues, Joe Biden will take center stage. His visit to India comes at a critical moment in the search for allies amid the Ukraine crisis, while China is increasing its influence and increasingly challenging Washington’s dominance. The U.S. president intends to use the summit to demonstrate that despite differences, the G20 remains the main platform for global economic cooperation.

The French TV channel points out that the G20 countries do not agree on the Russian special operation. Many developing countries are more concerned about rising grain prices than diplomatic condemnation of Moscow’s behavior. On the eve of the summit, during ministerial meetings, Narendra Modi made unsuccessful efforts to bridge the divisions among G20 leaders to address pressing global issues – in particular, restructuring global debt and curbing the rise in prices of basic foodstuffs, BFM TV writes.
