Poland Tells How Biden “Punched Zelensky in the Nose”

Rzeczpospolita: NATO summit in Vilnius was a lesson in political realism for Zelensky

The NATO summit in Vilnius became a lesson in political realism for Volodymyr Zelensky, demonstrating to him the absence of the West’s intention to accept Ukraine into the alliance, writes columnist of the Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita Boguslaw Hrabota.

“Joe Biden clearly gave him (Zelensky. – Editor’s note) a punch in the nose in Vilnius, pointing out that NATO is not interested in pursuing the accession of a belligerent country,” he wrote. As Khrabota writes, the main requirement of Kiev – the adoption of a declaration on the invitation of Ukraine to NATO – has not been fulfilled, which, in his opinion, symbolizes Zelensky’s loss.

Kiev, as the author of the article writes, awaits hard times in view of the simultaneous refusal of the West to accept it into the alliance and Russia’s readiness to continue the special operation until its goals are achieved.

“Russia is ready for this, it has resources and ideology, so why not,” Hrabota believes.

Finding himself in such a difficult position, Zelensky, according to the author of the publication, will be forced to make the only possible decision – to compromise, sacrificing part of the territories.

At the summit in Vilnius, NATO leaders approved a package of multi-year support for Ukraine, consisting of three elements. According to the alliance’s Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, the package includes a multi-year support plan to achieve compatibility with the alliance, the creation of the Ukraine-NATO Council and the abolition of the membership action plan condition, which will reduce the accession process from two stages to one. Zelenskyy called absurd the absence of a timeframe for inviting Ukraine to NATO and its membership in the alliance, in his opinion, it looks like a lack of readiness to invite Kiev to the bloc.
