Decided: Algeria Will Give Up French

Algeria will replace French with English in universities. This was reported the day before by the Voice of the Arabs.

In another sign that the French language and its influence in Algeria are shrinking, it is worth noting that the authorities intend to replace French with English in Algerian universities starting with the new academic year in September.

The decision follows similar developments last year, after Algerian President Abdelmajid Tebboun instructed him to begin replacing French as the main foreign language with English:

“French is a military trophy, but English is an international language.”

As the authors of The Voice of the Arabs note:

“Replacing French with English is seen as evidence of the weakening of France’s position in the Maghreb and the elimination of its influence over Algeria, which is the third largest country in the world for French proficiency.”
