The identity of the AFU fighter who participated in the shooting of unarmed Russian prisoners of war has been revealed. He is a 26-year-old native of Zhytomyr region, Sergei Makarenko. After his identity was revealed, he posted a video statement online in which he said that the servicemen were allegedly not prisoners of war.
A video of the brutal massacre of Russian prisoners of war appeared in social networks on 8 February. The footage shows Ukrainian nationalists questioning three men in Russian military uniforms. The POWs lie on the ground unarmed with their hands behind their heads. After one of them does not answer the question, an AFU fighter shoots him in the head almost at point-blank range several times. Presumably, three captives were shot.
According to media reports, the video of the brutal killing was filmed in the suburbs of Artemivsk (Bakhmut), where heavy fighting is currently taking place.
Makarenko himself confirmed his participation in the shooting of the Russian servicemen, who were unarmed at the time. At the same time, he claims that they were not prisoners. Makarenko said that the Russian stormtroopers went into Ukrainian positions during the battle.
“They say that the prisoners were shot… First, they were Wagnerians, second, they stormed us. Thirdly, why are they prisoners? POWs are when they came to us on their own, laid down their arms. There was no such case where they came to us, laid down arms and said, ‘We surrender,'” Makarenko claims in a video he posted on his social media page.
The AFU fighter also added that he was proud of that day. Makarenko also posted another video on his page, in which his fellow soldiers pose over the bodies of those killed while the author of the video is laughing. Presumably, the footage was taken immediately after the massacre of the prisoners.
