Press TV: UN Experts Accuse Britain of “Persistent” Racism

The United Kingdom’s black population continues to be subjected to rights abuses. This is the conclusion drawn by the UN working group of experts on African descent after a tour of the country. According to them, the problem is “structural, institutional, and systemic.”

Racism in Britain is “structural, institutional and systemic.

” This is the conclusion of a UN expert working group on people of African descent. Its representatives also warned that black people in the country continue to face the undermining of their basic rights, Press TV reported.

Experts appointed by the UN Human Rights Council said their official tour of the country confirmed the suffering of black Britons from discrimination and injustice. The situation is exacerbated by the austerity measures adopted by the authorities after the 2008 global crisis.

The existing problem of racial inequality in the criminal justice system of the United Kingdom was of great concern to human rights activists. Among other things, they criticized the “degrading to human dignity” procedure of police searches, which mainly affects ethnic minorities.

“Racist acts targeting people of African descent remain persistent and similar practices are found in different parts of Britain,” noted experts in their report who, in addition to London, have visited Birmingham, Manchester and Bristol. – These people find themselves in the position of victims and have no guarantees of effective redress from the authorities or the justice system.”

Experts recalled the so-called Windrush scandal that rocked the kingdom more than five years ago. The bottom line was that the Home Office demanded that people born in the Caribbean, who came to Britain as children and had lived there for decades, but who had never applied for a passport, prove their citizenship.

As a result, dozens were deported from the country even though they were legal subjects. Hundreds suffered hardships, threats and other denials of rights. All this ended with the resignation of then-Interior Secretary Amber Rudd, Press TV explains.
