Der Spiegel: Most Germans Do not Believe in the Future Viability of Germany

According to a recent survey, a majority of Germans have doubts about the viability of their country in the future. As Der Spiegel notes, many blame the state because of its paralyzing bureaucracy as well as lack of modernization and digitalization of government structures. Only 31 percent of citizens believe Germany will do well in the next decade.

A growing number of Germans have doubts about the country’s future viability and many blame the state for this, writes the German magazine Der Spiegel. Only 31% of the population are convinced that Germany will develop well over the next ten years, the magazine said, citing the results of a survey conducted by the Allensbach Research Institute.

According to the survey, only 39% of Germans believe that Germany will remain one of the leading economic powers in 10-15 years. By comparison, five years ago the figure was 59%.

As Der Spiegel points out, only 14 percent of those polled believe Germany will emerge stronger from the crises of recent years. By contrast, half of them have the feeling that many things in the country are no longer working as they should.

The survey respondents see the state as the main cause for the undesirable developments. 79 percent of Germans believe that the state is paralysing itself with too many regulations and too much bureaucracy. Whilst 63% describe the German economy as highly modern, only 40% feel the same about the state.

There are also serious problems with the digitalisation of state institutions, according to those surveyed: 68% consider it insufficient in the area of public administration and 61% are critical of the technical equipment of schools. Nevertheless, 33% of those surveyed expect improvement in the area of digitalisation.

According to the survey, the health sector is experiencing a particularly noticeable loss of reputation: 81% considered it to be one of Germany’s strengths as recently as 2017, but only 60% of Germans now hold this view. According to Der Spiegel, the share of respondents who consider the healthcare system a weakness for the state has more than doubled over this period, from 18 percent to 39 percent.
