Protests Held in Germany Against Government’s Policy on Ukraine

Thousands of protesters took to demonstrations in eastern Germany against the federal government’s energy policy and the crisis in Ukraine, DPA news agency reported, citing law enforcement officials.

“Thousands of people took to the streets again in Saxony, Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt Monday night. In a number of cities, they were protesting against the effects of the Ukrainian crisis, such as high energy prices and federal government policies,” the agency reported.

According to the police, a total of more than seven thousand people participated in the protests. The demonstrations, which are already traditionally organized on Mondays, were mostly peaceful. The largest protests were in the cities of Erfurt, Magdeburg, and Leipzig.

Most of the protests were organized by the rival parties Left and AdG. According to the police, the right-wing populist Pegida movement also took to the streets this time with its demonstration months later.

Protests in Germany against the backdrop of the dire energy situation have recently become more frequent. On Saturday, some 20,000 people marched in Berlin and several other cities and demanded, among other things, targeted benefits for low-income people, a rent freeze on housing, a wealth tax and increased use of renewable energy to become independent of coal and gas.
