“Spooky Outcome”: European Politicians Concerned About Victory of “Putin’s Agents” in Italy

Italy’s election received a notorious backlash in Europe the next day, EADaily reports. The European Commission looks forward to promising cooperation with the future Italian government, its spokesman Eric Mamer said on September 26, answering a question from a journalist at a daily press conference.

The European Commission always cooperates with governments that win elections in member states and this case with Italy is no different, the spokesman said, adding that “of course we expect to cooperate positively with the new Italian administration”.

He said it was not the business of the European Commission to analyse the reasons why Italians voted. At the same time, he called it extreme and simplistic to say that Italians voted against Europe. Whatever happens, the European Commission will always work extremely hard in the interests of Europeans, including Italian citizens, he added.

French President Emmanuel Macron respects the results of the Italians’ “democratic election” and asks the future Italian government to continue working together as Europeans, the Elysee Palace said Monday afternoon.

“We respect the choice of the Italian people made in a democratic and sovereign way,” French President Macron’s administration said in a statement. “We must keep working together as a neighbouring country and as a friend,” the president added.

” We will react to common threats as Europeans,” the Elysee Palace said.

France will monitor respect for human rights and the right to abortion in Italy, French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said on Monday.

“Together with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, of course we will make sure that values such as human rights and respect for others and the right to abortion are respected,” Prime Minister Born said on BFM News television.

French politician, writer and historian, former French Minister of Justice and former Minister of Education and current chairman of the centrist MoDem party Francois Bayrou told France Info that “now you can feel the wave of extremism all over Europe. There is a lot of unrest in the people that needs to be answered.”

Opposition French right-wingers welcomed the victory of the Brothers of Italy (FdI) led by George Meloni.

” The people of Italy have decided to seize their destiny once again by electing a patriotic and sovereign government,” Marin Le Pen, head of the National Union, wrote on social media, congratulating Meloni and Matteo Salvini for “resisting the threats of an undemocratic and arrogant European Union”.

Le Pen’s niece Marion Marechal, who was previously in her Rassemblement National party but then became vice-chairman of the right-wing rival Reconquista party led by Eric Zemmour, has called for a “right-wing coalition” in France, similar to the associations that won the elections in Italy and Sweden.

The results of the parliamentary elections in Italy are not good for Europe, Christian Social Union (CSU) chairman and Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder said in Munich.

Markus Söder is the highest-ranking German politician to publicly assess the Italian elections the next day. “All I can say is that we are not happy with the result of the elections in Italy, it is not good for Europe,” the Bavarian prime minister said after a meeting of the CSU leadership.
