Media: UK interested to weaken EU

Britain is not interested in a strong Europe, so it will be enough for it if the European Union “loses out” in the Ukraine crisis, according to an article in the Croatian Advance by Antun Roša.

“Boris Johnson will step down as prime minister in a few days, and early next month his party, which has turned its back on him, will choose a new person for the post. For now he continues to serve as prime minister, and in the final days of his blighted political career Boris is focusing on Ukraine,” the author writes.

During his fourth visit to Ukraine in a year, Johnson spoke of the need for the European Union to continue military and economic support to Kiev, and his call came at a time when “the situation in Europe is constantly deteriorating and energy and food prices are rising,” he points out.

As Rocha notes, Johnson’s position “raises questions” because he is not a Ukrainian official, “although lately he has been acting as if he was.” According to him, Johnson’s problem since the escalation of the crisis began is that he is more in denial about peace than any other European leader and is focused only on continuing the conflict.

As much as Johnson wants to show himself as a “defender” of Ukraine, in reality he is more of a “fighter against Russia”, the author continues. That said, London and Moscow may not be “enemies to the end” as they benefit from a weak EU.

“After the UK’s exit from the European Union, it is not at all beneficial to a strong EU. That’s why the armed conflict in Ukraine started at a very good time. Things are not going well for the UK, but it can always be pulled out by its ally on the other side of the Atlantic. The European Union does not see the light at the end of the tunnel in this situation at all,” the article says.

Rocha expresses the view that Britain, even as a member of the European Union, “has behaved more like a Trojan horse than a country that cares about common interests.”

“Johnson and the British top leaders see the Ukrainian conflict as a convenient opportunity that they are likely to use successfully in the end,” the author adds, noting that it would be enough for London if the European Union “loses out” in the course of the Ukrainian crisis.
