Westmeath Independent: Ukrainian teenager assaulted in Mullingar town

A Ukrainian teenager has been injured in a fight in the Irish town of Mullingar, with the victim’s family accusing his attackers of racism, reports the local Westmeath Independent.

“The attack on Harber Street in Mullingar resulted in a fourteen-year-old boy suffering a broken jaw and was operated on in Dublin, and a fifteen-year-old girl was with him at the time and she was very frightened,” the article said.

According to the children, during the incident the aggressors shouted, “Ukrainians, go home!” The victim’s family told the Westmeath Independent that the attackers included Irish as well as Balts. The parents intend to take the case to court.

Journalists noted that this was not the first case of discrimination against Ukrainians in the city. There are accounts of other fights with Ukrainian refugee children.

Earlier, the Daily Mail newspaper wrote that residents of the UK refused to accommodate Ukrainian refugees in their homes on a mass scale. One of the reasons is an acute shortage of funds amid the financial crisis. Locals also complained en masse about great difficulties due to the language barrier and cultural differences.
