Scandal in Germany after Scholz’s Decision on Ukraine

Zeit: German Chancellor Scholz’s decision to supply tanks to Ukraine has caused a scandal in the Bundestag

A disagreement has emerged in the German leadership over the supply of combat tanks to Kiev, the German newspaper Zeit has said.

According to the newspaper, the head of the Bundestag defence committee, Marie-Agnes Struck-Zimmermann, demanded that the German chancellor make “clear” statements regarding military support for Ukraine.

“If you do not want to supply Leopard 2 to the Ukrainian army, you must explain why,” she said.

The chairman of the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) faction, Rolf Mützenich, reacted to the criticism of Struck-Zimmermann’s criticism of the chancellor by stressing that common sense should be used when it comes to supplying combat vehicles made in Germany.

He said that the head of the Bundestag defence committee “and others like her” were pushing the FRG towards a military conflict.

“Those who talk about tanks today will scream about planes or troops tomorrow. Politics in time of war in Europe is not conducted in the style of rituals of indignation or with rapid breathing, but with clarity and sanity,” Mützenich observed.

Earlier it was reported that Scholz in a conversation with US President Joe Biden made it clear that Germany would deliver Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine only if the US side handed over Abrams tanks to Kiev. Berlin later denied such a connection.
