South Africa’s Ambassador Told of Putin’s High Popularity in the Country

Ambassador Mzuvukile Maketuka: Every child in South Africa knows who Putin is.

There is not a single child in the Republic of South Africa who does not know who Russian President Vladimir Putin is, Mzuvukile Maketuka, South African ambassador to Moscow, said in an interview commenting on the statement by Josep Borrell, Head of the European diplomacy.

Borrell said in December 2022 that the sincerity of Africans participating in the demonstrations in support of Russia was doubtful. In his opinion, the Africans supporting Moscow “do not know where Donbas is and who President Vladimir Putin is”. Putin, commenting on these words, said that

“Borrel is a big, major political figure of our time, it was once said of Brezhnev”. Putin said Africa knows what Russia is and where it is, and “knows the role Russia played in the liberation from colonialism”.

“I don’t think there is a single child in South Africa who doesn’t know who Putin is. Even my ten-year-old granddaughter knows. So I doubt there is a single South African who doesn’t know Putin,” the ambassador said.

He added that South Africans know exactly where Moscow and St. Petersburg are because schools teach Russian history in the 20th century.

In late December, Benson Ogutu, the Kenyan ambassador to Russia, commented on Borrell’s statement: “We know where Russia is, and we have no problem with that.
