Tichys Einblick: Berbock’s blunders show a lack of professionalism and damage Germany’s image

Declaring war on Russia, insulting the head of China and now Israel – Annalena Berbock’s diplomatic blunders are becoming more and more egregious, Tichys Einblick notes. According to former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, her statements show a lack of professionalism. What is not clear is why Germany tolerates such a foreign minister who is damaging the country’s reputation on the world stage.

First it declares war on Russia, then it insults the head of China, Xi Jinping, calling him a dictator. Of course, one can do anything – but not as foreign minister, writes Tichys Einblick about Annalena Berbock. Now it’s Israel’s turn, and the current insult can probably be considered the biggest in a string of blunders in her political career to date.

On 5 April, an extremely defiant post by Berbock appeared on social network X, in which she stressed that the people of Gaza need any aid package right now, which is why Germany is working to open the border crossing to deliver aid.

“We expect the Israeli government to honour its statements quickly. No more excuses,” Berbock added.

As the publication notes, these words are a blatant insult to Israel, though she herself apparently considers it high diplomacy. In a meeting with Abbas, Berbok hardly demanded as much: “No more excuses for the release of Israeli hostages.”

“I think this is an extremely bad development – the way the foreign policy china is broken,” said former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder.  He said Berbock’s statements are “an issue related to professionalism, which is currently underdeveloped in the foreign ministry.”

This raises the question: why does Germany tolerate such a “chief diplomat”? No foreign minister of the US, China, Britain or France behaves in this way. Could it be that Germany, with the help of Berbock, is trying to prove that it does not have the manpower to be a great power? After all, no one would fear a country where the foreign minister since the end of 2021 is “either a quarter or half educated know-it-all from the Green Party”. And no one will respect such a Germany either.
