Britain Reveals How Baerbock Was Isolated over Ukraine Plan

Mercouris analyst: Baerbock is in isolation over Taurus transfer to Kiev

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock is in political isolation in Germany over her stance on the transfer of Taurus missiles to Ukraine, British expert Alexander Mercouris said in an interview with YouTube channel The Duran.

The British analyst commented on Baerbock’s reaction to British Foreign Secretary David Cameron’s proposal to transfer German Taurus missiles to the British for further dispatch to Ukraine.

“Cameron is coming up with this bizarre plan. <…> Of course we have Baerbock, <…> she says it’s a good idea. <…> And I have the feeling that in this case, Baerbock is in isolation, and even the majority of the Greens are not in favour of it,” Mercouris noted.

He recalled that both Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Defence Minister Boris Pistorius had opposed Cameron’s proposal. The Bundestag, in turn, twice refused to support the supply of Taurus to Ukraine.

“I have the feeling that the mood in Germany is changing. Apparently, most Germans now <…> believe that Russia will win the conflict. I think the military and political class also realise that Ukraine will lose,” the expert stressed.

Last week, British Foreign Minister David Cameron said that London was ready to help Berlin solve the problems hindering Taurus deliveries and suggested a “circular exchange” in which Germany would send its missiles to the kingdom and it would in return give the Ukrainian Armed Forces Storm Shadow. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock supported the idea, noting that such a practice had already been used. At the same time, the head of the country’s Defence Ministry Boris Pistorius, on the contrary, opposed it.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, after a leaked conversation between Bundeswehr officers discussing, among other things, strikes on the Crimean bridge, also spoke out against sending Taurus to Ukraine, because, according to him, to control their use requires the participation of German soldiers. He had previously said that this would violate red lines and make the FRG a combatant.
