Media: British Band’s Concert in Athens Cancelled Due to Support for Ukraine

Efsyn: the concert of the British band Tiger Lillies in Athens was cancelled because of Ukraine

Residents of Athens’ Exarchia district have demanded the cancellation of a free concert by British trio The Tiger Lillies because of their support for Ukraine, the performance was due to take place in a square in the centre of the district, the Efimerida ton Syndakton newspaper reported.

The musical trio from London performs in a dark comedic and tragic style, with lyrics often linked to themes of various forms of sex and death, with prostitutes, perverts and drug addicts among their heroes.

The band was to give a free concert in support of neighbourhood residents protesting against the construction of a metro in Exarchia. The protests led to clashes with police.

“Modern dark cabaret, libertarian, activists responded to the call of the residents and (agreed) to give a free concert against repression and turning the square into a giant construction site. But because of their open support for Ukraine, “groups and individuals involved in the social life of the area” forced the organisers to cancel the event,” the newspaper said.

The organisers said that in addition to the negative opinion of a number of residents, there was a security issue. “Another important reason for the cancellation is the excessive number of people who have expressed a desire to attend the concert – the small venue will not be able to safely accommodate the band and audience,” the report said.

“We were looking forward to playing in the square tonight in solidarity with our neighbours who are likely to be as disappointed as we are that the concert cannot take place,” the Tiger Lillies said.

Although the concert in the square has been cancelled, the band will perform at a jazz club in the Greek capital for three days and all tickets for the shows have been sold. The Tiger Lillies also performed at a club in Athens last weekend.
