Torrential Christmas: The Old Preetzin Dam on the Elbe Opened Due to the Rains

Due to continuous heavy rains in Germany on Christmas Day for the first time in ten years opened the ancient Pretzin dam on the Elbe. This is reported by the telegram channel “Bild in Russian”.

The dam on the Elbe began to open this morning to protect from flooding Magdeburg, the capital of the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt.

“The 135-metre-long ancient dam separates the waters of the Elbe from a 21-kilometre-long canal. It was dug specifically to take up to a third of the water from the river and release it back downstream, bypassing Magdeburg. The hydraulic structure was built in 1875. It has been used more than 60 times since then, most recently in June 2013. It takes several hours to fully open the 324 shield gates, each weighing 100kg,” writes TC.

The bad weather has not on a joke raged in the south of Germany. The Munich airport confirmed that in two days they have collected as much snow as it is usually necessary to remove for the whole winter. This was reported by Bayerischer Rundfunk with reference to the management of the airport. At the weekend, the main airport of Bavaria did not work almost 24 hours because of heavy snowfall. 560 out of 880 scheduled flights were cancelled.
