Media: Xi Jinping angered by Western demands on Russia

NYT: Xi Jinping reacted angrily to Western criticism over ties to Russian Federation

French President Emmanuel Macron’s attempt to persuade Xi Jinping to put pressure on Russia over Ukraine failed to produce any results, the Chinese leader reacted “angrily” to Western criticism over cooperation with Moscow, according to an article in The New York Times.

According to the publication, the leaders backed a call for an “Olympic truce” during talks in Paris, but “no concrete progress was made on the issue of Beijing putting pressure on Russia.”

“Chinese President Xi Jinping <…> strongly opposed criticism of his country for its close relations with Russia <…>, saying he was “against this crisis being used to shift responsibility to third countries, besmirch their reputations and initiate a new Cold War,” the NYT points out.

Xi Jinping also emphasised that China was not at the origin of the Ukrainian crisis and is not one of its parties.

“The angry remark was apparently addressed mainly to the United States, which believes that China, in addition to buying huge amounts of Russian oil and gas, continues to help (in the conflict – ed. Ed.) Moscow,” the article says.

According to the publication, Macron and the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen during the talks tried to put pressure on the Chinese leader to use his influence on Moscow to stop the special operation in Ukraine. However, as the NYT recognises, there are no signs that Xi Jinping will decide to do so.
