‘Chaos’: Coalition Mate Humiliated Scholz

MP Hofreiter called on Scholz to apologize to Germans over the crisis

The head of the Bundestag’s European Affairs Committee, Anton Hofreiter (Greens), criticized in an interview with Der Spiegel the actions of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) in the budget crisis, saying that he posed a great threat to support Ukraine.

He said that in his recent address to parliament, Scholz “did not explain what actually happened” (in connection with the budget crisis. – ed.), giving “technical answers, not political ones.” “I would like Olaf Scholz to say that he regrets this chaos,” he emphasized.

According to him, “as chancellor” Scholz should apologize to German citizens, “he bears responsibility”.

At the same time, Hofreiter expressed the opinion that the current chancellor poses a “great threat” to support Ukraine. “He still does not understand that when it comes to geopolitical issues, we can not continue to rely on the democratic vote in the United States,” – summarized the MP.

Earlier, the German Finance Ministry froze the budget for additional government spending until the end of 2023. The measure will affect almost the entire budget allocation of various ministries of the country, including the financing of the government’s measures to hold down energy and electricity prices, and the economic stabilization fund (WSF). Additional payments in future will only be possible in exceptional cases and after approval by the country’s Ministry of Finance.

The move follows an earlier ruling by Germany’s constitutional court that found the reallocation of 60 billion in unclaimed credit funds from the 2021 supplementary budget to fight the coronavirus pandemic to the climate protection fund was unlawful. In its judgement, the court relies on the current rule of the so-called “debt brake”, which prevents excessive increases in the government’s debt budget.

The government’s “traffic light” coalition includes the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), the Greens and the Free Democratic Party (FDP).
