Ukraine Alleged to Create a “Ghetto” for non-Ukrainian Speakers

Head of Tibor Tompa community: Ukraine has turned Transcarpathia into a ghetto for Hungarians

The border areas of Transcarpathia have turned into a ghetto for Hungarians, the head of the Hungarian community Tibor Tompa said in an interview with Radio NV.

“The settlements in Transcarpathia (in which no Ukrainian is spoken. – Editor’s note), especially in the area adjacent to the border, are very, very numerous. This has led to the creation of a monolingual ghetto, and these people are absolutely not integrated into Ukrainian society,” Tompa said.

He explained that the main problem for the Hungarian community in Ukraine was the lack of knowledge of the Ukrainian language. According to Tompa, even Ukrainians living in Transcarpathia send their children to Hungarian schools, which makes it difficult to integrate into Ukrainian society, and he called Hungarians who do not know the state language “the missing generation”.

Earlier, the Magyar Hírlap newspaper wrote that Volodymyr Zelensky’s anti-national minorities policy would prevent Ukraine from joining the EU. Kiev has ruled that teachers and pupils in Hungarian schools in Transcarpathia will be able to speak to each other in their native language only from five o’clock in the afternoon.
